"Man From the South"

Consider how the daily routine and the occupations of the soldier in the story might change if he lost the bet. Also think about what the daily occupations of the wife of the man betting against the soldier might look like. In a blog post, and assuming the soldier loses the bet, identify an occupation that is likely to be impacted in either character. Why will this occupation be affected, and what is one modification (equipment and/or strategy) that might help the solider or the wife to regain independence in that particular occupation?

Although we think of the little finger as useless, it is very much needed for grip strength. An occupation that would likely be impacted by no little finger or only having one finger and a thumb would be brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth is an activity of daily living that if not easily done could mess up your daily routine. Typically, when brushing your teeth, you perform a power grip. A power grip uses all fingers and thumb to grasp an object. If you are not able to grasp your tooth brush you will not be able to brush your teeth efficiently. A modification I would suggest would be a hand clip that has two attachments. The first attachment would be around the toothbrush. The second would clip or slide around the palm of your hand. It wouldn’t require as much grip strength and would be easy to put together. I would also suggest an electric tooth brush rather than a manual one. This would make the occupation of brushing your teeth easier.

  1. Cool idea! I would have NEVER thought of the clip attachment, so that is super creative. I cannot imagine losing the full ability to brush my teeth the way that I do now.

  2. This is really neat! I never have heard of a toothbrush that has two clips. This would definitely help the soldier with brushing his teeth. I also just read about a toothbrush modification that included putting the head of the toothbrush on the "knub" of the amputated finger or placing it on another finger. Both of these are modifications I would have never thought of!

  3. I think your adaption is super creative and I would not have thought about using a hand grip. I like how the occupation you choose is simple yet very important to a persons daily routine.

  4. I like the idea of an electric toothbrush. Using a manual tooth brush requires so much of our hand and a power grip that we don't even realize! with the use of an electric toothbrush he wouldn't have to have as strong as a grip considering it does most of the work for you. Great ideas!
